The Pencils




Formed in 1980, this North London based band settled on a line-up in early 1981 which comprised former JETZ members; DEN PUGSLEY, TONY SKEGGS and ANDY WELSFORD (WELLS). With the addition of RICK BIRMINGHAM on keyboards, the band gigged extensively on the London circuit for 3 years. They were signed to Derek Nichol's DNO Management in Autumn 1981 and released 3 singles on the Next Record Label between July 1982 and April 1983. (Watching The Tears, If You Really Wanna Hurt Somebody and Pictures Of Paris).The band gathered many favourable reviews in National and local press, including SOUNDS and MELODY MAKER and their records were played on Radio One by such DJ luminaries as John Peel, Kid Jensen and Mike Read. Radio One also broadcast a 7 song, live performance on their "In Concert" series in July 1981. In April 1983 THE PENCILS embarked on a National University tour with Birmingham based reggae band WEAPON OF PEACE, performing in towns as far afield as Glasgow, Newcastle and Bradford. The Pencils performed their final show on July 29th, 1983. The Pencils album was released in Germany in 1984. 

The Pencils Anthology was released on November 19th 2012. The band also plan on performing some new live shows in London.
